remember when you’d come home and find a bunch of shareware CD’s in your mailbox? or you’d burn a CD and it would sometimes FAIL?!! and after a while, all these CD’s would pile up and lay around. you would eventually find yourself sometimes using them as coasters for beverages and/or simply chuck them into the sky to see how far they’d fly (somewhat like a clay pigeon) in some sort of amusement to TRY to get your ¢’s worth? or perhaps you were a bit of an extremist like myself on the rare occasions where after the umpeenth consecutive CD that failed to burn, casted such a heightened sense of frustration that you attempted to take a bite out of it in a blinded hastefull rage?
in the mid 90’s, i eventually tried a more productive route and went back to the coaster idea. the basic throw CD coaster was just not official enough. i created some prototypes back in highschool and was simply content! specially with version 2.0 because it had that industrial look and feel that i believe even trent reznor would of been pleased with!!!
version 1.0 (no tools necessary)
PS1 CD* + rubber nubbies + adhesive
AOL CD + recycled foam/rubber + adhesive
version 1.925 (garage time…find those nuts and bolts!)
AOL CD + 3 hex machine screws + nuts + caps
version 2.0 (2 ply)
AOL CDx2 + 4 bolts + metal caps
*([PS1 DISC] was a stupid demo…could probably still play it if i take the nubs off.)
its what you’ve always wanted to do with your junk CD’s!!!
now, due to the fact i cant find a job… nearly a decade later, the saga continues! i decided to dismantle the old brittle and cracked 2.0 versions. and used the hardware to make some decent conceptual versions!
version 3.0 (3 ply & more hardware)
clear/2pac**/generic + 3 hex machine screws + washers + nuts + caps
version 3.1 (3 ply & more hardware)
bubblegumpink/generic/optimum + hardware
**([2pac R U still down? disc 2] had a crack in it. i would NEVER deface a perfectly good music CD! i drilled it strategically so the washers would hide most of the crack. it made a great middle layer for this project as well as a collectible in my eyes!)
hopefully i can make some of these things and maybe sell them? i should really try to make matching sets. but theres always going to be those one of a kinds!!! my problem is after i make them im going to want to keep them to myself like some greedy deranged hobbit.
